The Breast Cancer & Women’s Health Institute (BCWHI) at Tyrone Regional Health Network is known for the outstanding breast cancer services it provides. Now, BCWHI offers area women even more, through a team of women’s health physician specialists and an expanded collection of services. At BCWHI women now have access to breast cancer surgeons, general surgeons, a gynecologist and a radiologist with special interest in women’s imaging.
Kennita Burns-Johnson, D.O, the new medical director at BCWHI says the decades of collective experience and expertise within the women’s health care team supports BCWHI’s focus on high quality care and attention to each woman’s unique health needs.
“We want women to have a total quality experience at BCWHI and that includes service as well,” says Dr. Burns – Johnson. At BCWHI there are no long waits for physician appointments, diagnostics, procedures or surgery. Test results are also provided quickly.
Physician specialists who comprise BCWHI’s women’s healthcare team are:
Kennita Burns – Johnson, D.O., breast surgeon and general surgeon.
Dr. Burns-Johnson’s experience includes providing services in a community hospital setting to a level 1 trauma facility. She also has specialized training in laparoscopic surgery also known as minimally invasive surgical techniques.
Stephen Schmidt, M.D., FACS, FRCS, breast surgeon and general surgeon.
Dr. Schmidt has been involved in the care of breast cancer patients in the Central Pennsylvania region for the past 35 years. He is proficient in current diagnostic methods and treatments.
Kenneth Lee, M.D., FACS, Gynecologist.
Dr. Lee is well known for his expertise in laparoscopic surgery. He was one of the first gynecologists in the U.S. who pioneered advanced Laparoscopic surgery. Since 1998 he has been a preceptor surgeon working with the Ethicon Endo-Surgery Institute of America to teach other gynecologists laparoscopic surgical techniques. Dr. Lee has performed over 1,500 laparoscopic hysterectomies. Almost all hysterectomies he performs are done through laparoscopic surgical techniques, avoiding surgery that involves major incisions. Other gynecological procedures he performs are also done using the least invasive surgical techniques.
Kelly Biggs, M.D., Medical Director, Radiology.
Dr. Biggs is a general radiologist with special interest in women’s imaging, including mammography, breast ultrasound, image guided biopsy, pelvis ultrasound, and pelvis MRI. He is Chairman of the Government Relations Committee, American College of Radiology Breast Cancer Screening Commission, and also serves on the Breast Cancer Screening Communications Committee.

Gynecology: Non-surgical and surgical gynecology care for women of all ages including: Routine Gynecology Exams, Gynecological surgery utilizing minimally invasive techniques, Reproductive Healthcare, Gynecologic Ultrasound, Pelvis Ultrasound, Pelvis MRI, Bone Densitometry and Colon Cancer Screening.
