News You Need to Know: New Telephone Area Codes Approved for Pennsylvania

To ensure a continuing supply of telephone numbers, the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission has approved the addition of the new 582 area code for the 814 area code region. This process, known as an area code overlay, does not require customers to change their existing area code, but does require using a new dialing procedure to make phone calls.

This will require new dialing procedures for all calls in the 814 area code. In addition to the seven digits you currently dial, you will need to first use the area code followed by the seven digits. The same dialing process will apply to telephone numbers that are assigned in the new 582 area code.

Effective April 3, 2021, if you have an 814 area code, you will need to dial the area code followed by the telephone number on all calls, including calls within the same area code. Beginning May 1, 2021, the new 582 area code may be assigned to new telephone lines or services. You will need to update services, automatic dialing equipment, and other equipment programmed to dial a seven-digit number to include the area code. This could include safety and medical monitoring devices, fire or burglar alarm and security systems, Internet dial-up numbers, speed dialers, call forwarding settings, voicemail, and other services.

Residential customers should call 800-788-3500 and business customers should call 800-786-6272 regarding the changes, or visit www.puc.pa.gov.
